A treasure chest belonging to the pirate Charles Harris, who was hanged at Newport in 1723, is at the base of Newport Cliffs. The chest is 20″ x 12″ x 12″ with the contents unknown. It was found in 1949 and covered by the sands and lost again before it could be taken up.
