Monterey
There is a story that gold worth $780,000 in an iron safe was stolen from Tom Sing of Monterey in 1875. It is believed to be cached on the banks of the Salinas River, at a point midway between Gonzales and Chualar. The men who buried the cache followed an old cattle trail and secreted the safe amid a group of pine trees a few hundred yards from the riverbed. They were killed by a sheriff’s posse before the safe was ever recovered.
