At a little spring north of Pilot Peak, the Donner Party buried a large store of gold and silver coins as they laboriously moved their group along the trail, only to later experience the ill-fated trek at Donners Pass. This is why so little was found at the site of the tragedy. Old family records verify that a large amount of treasure was being transported, the capital for the starting of a new way of life for the entire wagon train.
