Aransas County Spanish Gold

There is an old story that a mule train loaded with pay for Spanish soldiers left it’s planned route to escape pursuing Indians. When overtaken near Falso Live Oak Point at the southern tip of St. Joseph Island, the money was hurriedly buried before the party of Spaniards was wiped out. It has been pointed out that the pay trains carried more special than commonly thought, because the risk of getting safely through the wild and inhospitable country was so great, that enough money was carried to pay the troops for an extended period of time. St. Joseph Island is across Aransas Pass from Mustang Island.
