The Sunken Treasure Ship in Pierre
In the 1860’s an unidentified vessel carrying bullion was wrecked in the Missouri River, off Pierre, before a permanent settlement was located there. The cargo of gold from the mines of Montana was valued at $500,000. Reports at the time said the site of the sinking was near three towering cottonwood trees growing close together. In Riverside Park in Pierre, at Missouri Avenue and Crow Street, there once stood three trees answering this description. They were known as The Three Sisters.
